If you’re traveling as a big group, this is the meal everyone will remember. Dan’l Boone Inn has served family-style Southern cooking in downtown Boone since 1959, out of a building that was once the town’s first hospital.
There’s no ordering from a menu. Bowls and platters come to the table and get passed around until everyone’s full: fried chicken, country-style steak, country ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, stewed apples, corn, coleslaw and biscuits, with dessert to finish. On weekends there’s a breakfast spread too, with country ham, pancakes, grits and cinnamon biscuits.
Good to know: reservations are only taken for groups of 15 or more, so a full house of 20 can book ahead. Smaller groups are seated first come, first served, and there’s often a wait in peak season. Hours change through the year, so call ahead before you drive over. It’s about 20 minutes from the house.
