Things to Do Near Banner Elk With Kids: Tweetsie, Grandfather Mountain and Snow Tubing

Family watching the Tweetsie Railroad No. 190 steam locomotive

Valle View Retreat was set up with families in mind, from the Pack ‘n Play and toddler tableware to the game room that keeps teenagers busy. When you’re ready to get out of the house, these are the days out that work best for mixed ages near Banner Elk.

Tweetsie Railroad

Tweetsie Railroad has been running between Boone and Blowing Rock since 1957. The highlight is a real steam train ride of about three miles, with Wild West skits along the way. One ticket covers unlimited train rides, live shows, a small zoo, classic rides and gold panning. It’s a seasonal park, open on weekends in spring and fall and five days a week in summer, so check the schedule and buy tickets online.

Grandfather Mountain

Walking the Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain is the big one. The 228-foot footbridge crosses an 80-foot chasm at 5,305 feet, and it sways just enough to make it exciting. There are wildlife habitats with black bears, river otters and bald eagles, and a nature center for younger kids. Buy timed-entry tickets in advance and pack a jacket, as the summit is usually much cooler than the valley.

Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline

In winter, Hawksnest in Seven Devils is a guaranteed hit, with long snow tubing lanes for ages 3 and up and a lodge where non-riders can stay warm. The rest of the year, its ziplines take over, with tours for ages 5 and up. Book online early, as weekend sessions sell out.

Linville Caverns on a rainy day

If the weather turns, Linville Caverns offers 35-minute guided tours inside a mountain, at a steady 52 degrees all year. Kids love spotting the trout in the underground stream. Strollers aren’t allowed, but front carriers are.

Back at the house

Some of the best family time happens at home: the fire pit after dark, a game of pool or skee-ball in the game room, and the hot tub once the kids are in bed. Everything is on one level, so naps and early nights are easy.
