Three days is enough to get a real feel for the North Carolina High Country without rushing. This itinerary uses Valle View Retreat in Valle Crucis as your base, keeps drives short and leaves time to enjoy the house. Swap things around to suit the season and your group.
Day 1: Settle into Valle Crucis
Check in from 4pm and take your time unpacking. Watch the sunset from the front porch rockers, cook something easy in the chef’s kitchen, then head down to the fire pit once it’s dark. If it’s a summer Friday, skip dinner at home and catch Music in the Valle at Valle Crucis Community Park, a free evening concert from 6pm.
Day 2: The mountain day
Start early at Grandfather Mountain, with timed-entry tickets booked in advance. Walk the Mile High Swinging Bridge, visit the wildlife habitats, and bring a jacket for the summit.
In the afternoon, drive the Blue Ridge Parkway north toward Blowing Rock. Look for the Linn Cove Viaduct, stretch your legs on the easy loop around Price Lake and stop at Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. Check the NPS road status before you go.
Wind down with a tasting at Grandfather Vineyard, which often has live music and a food truck, then head home for the hot tub.
Day 3: Valle Crucis, slowly
Have breakfast at Pearl’s Kitchen, then browse the Original Mast General Store next door and grab something from the candy barrels at the Annex. In summer, spend the afternoon by the Watauga River at Valle Crucis Community Park. In winter, swap this for a day at Sugar Mountain or snow tubing at Hawksnest.
For your last night, book a big family-style dinner at Dan’l Boone Inn in Boone, or have a private chef cook at the house so nobody has to wash up.
Rainy day backup
If the weather turns, Linville Caverns is a great indoor option, and the game room back at the house will keep everyone busy for hours.
